Enjoy International Workers Day with this classic of Soviet modernist cinema. “Strike” (Eisenstein, USSR, 1925) is definitively radical; as much in politics as in style. A story of a labor strike from incitement to suppression as told through a virtual bombardment of arresting, on occasion jarring imagery, Eisenstein puts unquestioning trust in his own aesthetic and political sensibilities, as well as in the audience’s ability to interpret them to create a film that is infinitely more than the sum of its parts. No simple social drama — rather, a revolutionary passion rendered on film.
